Frequently Asked Questions

Who runs the program?

The head of the Bible Quizzing Program at Berrien Center Bible Church is Dr. David L. Cooke. He and his wife, Jeannette, have been running the program since 1987. They both grew up participating in Bible quizzing, and their kids were also part of the BCBC Bible Quiz team in the past. Terri Theriault assists Dr. Cooke in administrative matters for the Teen Division, and Elizabeth Babler serves as assistant director for the Children’s Division.

How old is the Bible Quiz program at BCBC?

Berrien Center Bible Church has a rich history of Bible quizzing. The church has field quiz teams for more than 50 years.

Who do we quiz with?

We are quizzing with the Missionary Quizzing Group in Northern Indiana.

What are the age requirements?

Quizzers can participate in one of two divisions: Children’s Division (Grades 1–6), and Teen Division (Grades 7 and up). The upper age limit in the Children’s Division is 13. If participants are going to turn 13 before July 31 of the next year, they will be placed in the Teen Division. Experienced quizzers who are in 6th Grade are allowed to quiz in the Teen Division even if they are only 11 or 12 years of age.

Can parents be involved?

Parents of the quizzers are encouraged to help out during quizzing practices as quiz masters and score keepers. During quiz competitions, parents can serve as drivers, team coaches, and score keepers.

Can those who are unfamiliar with Bible quizzing join the program?

Absolutely! Every quizzer will receive a folder containing the rules and guidelines for Children’s and Teen Quizzing. All the participants and their parents should read the rules and guidelines before we start the quizzing practices. Each quizzer will also get a complete list of quizzing events and a quiz practice schedule for the season indicating what materials will be covered for each practice session and each monthly quiz meet. Printed study and review materials—both the Bible passages and the quiz questions which are divided into categories—will also be included in the folder that each quizzer will receive before the practices begin. Additionally, there are adults who will help coach and train anyone interested in quizzing.

What is involved in studying for the competitions?

Every quiz is comprised of 20 questions from a select portion of Scripture. The Children’s Division quizzing materials will include 100% of the questions to be used at the quiz meets. The Teen Division will include only 50% of the questions to be used at the quiz meets. The questions are divided into different categories: Who, What, Miscellaneous, Multiple Questions and Answers, Situation, According to, Finish the Verse, and Quotes. Some participants may either be asked to choose or will be assigned one or two categories so that quizzer doesn’t have to study and memorize all the different quiz questions and answers. Other quizzers prefer to memorize or familiarize themselves with the material such that they do not need to study the questions. The coach will take into consideration the quizzer’s preference and individual strengths when deciding on study methods and who gets what category. Training with kids who take studying and quizzing seriously will hopefully be an encouragement to all the participants to do their best and not see quizzing merely as a way to socialize with their church friends.

What is involved in a quiz?

A quiz is comprised of 20 questions from a select portion of Scripture. Two teams with no more than 4 quizzers on the benches at any given time compete for the right to answer these questions. The first quizzer to jump on each question wins this right. He is given 30 seconds to finish the question from the point that he jumped and correctly answer it to receive 20 points for his team. An error results in a penalty of -10 points. Along the way there are unique opportunities to earn bonus points.

How long is the quiz season?

The Children’s season runs from September to March. The Teen’s season is from September to May. The Teen Division has optional tournaments throughout the season.

How often do quizzers compete?

There is a quiz practice every Wednesday evening in rooms 303, 304, and 305 at the church from 4:45 to 5:45. (Dinner is served in the Family Life Center (gym) from 5:45 to 6:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner. There is no charge for the meal, but donations are welcome.) The official quiz meets occur one Saturday every month: First Saturday for Teen, and third Saturday for Children’s.

Where are the quiz competitions located?

Most quizzing locations are within an hour’s drive from Berrien Center Bible Church.

How do quizzers get to the competitions?

Depending on the number of participants, we either take the church van or the church bus to the quiz meet. Parents are welcome to participate, but they are not required to do so. Quizzers usually meet at the church parking lot and ride to the quiz meet location together. Departure time can be as early as 7 AM depending on the destination. Parents can choose to drive separately. Typically the Children’s Division returns to church by 2:00, and the Teen Division by 5:00.

What are the meal arrangements?

Every Wednesday after quiz practice, dinner is served in the Family Life Center (gym) from 5:45 to 6:30 PM. Everyone in the family is welcome to join us for dinner. There is no charge for the meal, but donations are welcome.

Most people take a sack lunch to the Saturday quiz competitions. Some hosting churches offer meals for purchase..
